About the Author

My name is Elise Patricia Baptiste-Cox. I was born and raised on the 13sq mile. Island of Carriacou a three-Island state that consists of Grenada, Carriacou, and Petite Martinique, in the West Indies, the morning after a hurricane struck the island and almost totally devastated it. I am the fifth child in a family of seven children that survived–four boys and three girls (including two sets of twins born before and after me) that were born to Jonathan T. Baptiste, and Jane Rose Mills-Baptiste, who are now deceased. My oldest brother recently became deceased. He passed away on New Year’s Day this year. The countdown has begun. I first came to this country in 1976 for the purpose of marrying my neighbor, and childhood sweetheart, Curtis, who was at the time doing a residency in Neurosurgery, at a hospital in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1977, my husband, our baby boy and myself, went to the island Trinidad, in the West Indies, where my husband practiced medicine at Port-of Spain General Hospital. If I impress people with my writings, that’s great. If not, certainly, that is not my concern the fact is writing gives me wings to fly that I otherwise lack, and because of that I write and will keep on writing. I have given this volume the title Carriacou Cox Tales Callaloo. Callaloo which is, widely known throughout the Caribbean is a stew-like dish invented by the African slaves who settled on the various islands, combines African and indigenous ingredients in creating something completely distinctive and new.
