About the Author

My decision to finally complete the writings that I have complied over the years came as a result of a conversation with one of my friends as we spoke about the vicissitudes of life. Especially, the unexpected tragic loss of friends who we expected to be around a lot longer to share in our joy, laughter, and, at times, pain. As I discussed my own tribulations during 2008, my attempts to deal with chronic health woes and unexpected diagnoses, my friend said, “Jackie, what will be your legacy?” What imprint will you have left when you depart this earth? I thought, I have worked abundant hours in service to others in sacrifice of my own time, and I presently have no children in terms of a legacy. A few days later, I realized what I had done the least was to share the various parts of myself with those close to me. I decided to combine my love of photography with my written words, where I have expressed on paper what I sometimes have been unable to share with those closest to me. Therefore, this book, inclusive of pictures that I have taken, advice dispensed by others, my poetry, and short stories, is a conversation with friends and family. A friend once told me, “Jacqueline, you are not a mess, you just have to get out of your own way.” Well this book is my effort at getting out of my own way as I face and view every challenge as an opportunity for growth while embracing those who I encountered on my road to recovery and self-actualization.
