From My Bronx Backyard: The Birds is the first in a series of books designed to help teachers and students gain a better understanding and appreciation of the immediate world around them. While many nature books deal with far-off, exotic places, this book deals with what can be realistically seen and studied right around us. Chock full of on-the-scene photos of backyard birds as well as activities appropriate for third, fourth, and fifth grade students, this book brings urban ecological studies into the home and classroom with easy-to-read information. Anecdotes of the different birds help students and teachers familiarize themselves with the diversity of the avian world around them. Some birds have been observed exhibiting never-before-seen behaviors, only validating the uniqueness of the backyard bird study. Photographs have all been taken by the author and reflect a levelheaded approach to backyard study. Activities have been composed to address a multidisciplinary approach to instruction, without all of the requisite jargon of other teacher activity books.
