About the Author

Gary Smith joined the LAPD in 1958 and, after serving on street patrol for 2 years, he realized his dream of becoming a motorcycle officer. He served on the Traffic Enforcement Division for 16 years, turning down promotions in order to remain a BCMC. He transferred to a plain-clothed assignment in 1976 and for the remainder of his 23-year career, he served arrest warrants as a kind of “Bounty Hunter” for LAPD. After his retirement in 1981, after which he worked 20 years in the motorcycle industry for American Honda Motor Co. in safety and event promotions.
