About the Author

I was born in Scott County, VA., about two miles above Dungannon, VA We grew up on Clinch River in the house that my grandfather James Monroe (Buck) Mann built in the eighteen hundreds. My mother said that she helped him build the house. My parents were: Fairbanks Benjamin Hartsock and Martha Jane Hartsock. I have two brothers: Benjamin Claude Hartsock, Russell Hartsock and one sister Mattie Hartsock Beverly. We grew up during the “Great Depression.” The days of wood and coal cook stoves, oil fireplaces, lamps and out houses. Some of the more fortunate folks had electricity running water, and telephones. We never had any of those luxuries, but we got along just fine without them. I started to school at Dungannon, Virginia when I was six years old. I won a prize in the third grade for telling the best story. It was a pretty box of handkerchiefs. I graduated from Dungannon High School in May of 1951. After graduation, I went to Kingsport, Tennessee. I worked at Intermountain Telephone Company for about two years. I married Loyde Jack Davis of Coeburn, Virginia We had one daughter and two sons. Loyde Jack passed away in February, nineteen and ninety-nine. I still live in Coeburn, Virginia I am an artist, a writer and a member of Grace Covenant Church near Coeburn, VA. I am also a member of the Kiwanis Club of Coeburn, Virginia.
