About the Book

In this book, I have written about some aspects of the war which, I believe, the world must know and remember as a memorial of tragic years. The book begins with my life as a teen. What I have written here is the true story of tragedy and achievements. I never thought that one day I would leave my homeland and move to America and proudly call Iowa my home.

About the Author

Ziska Paden Hasanic I was born in Bosnia and had lived there for sixteen years. After we were forced to leave our home in 1992, I moved from place to place hoping to find a place to call a home. I spent a year living in Croatia in a refugee camp with my mother and close to two thousand other refugees. In fall of 1993, I moved to Germany with my mother and had lived there until war was over. In 1997, I got married. My husband and I moved from Germany to America. We barely knew any English. It was difficult, but after a year, we were able to speak, read, and write English. I obtained college degree in accounting. I am very thankful for all the great things that I learned and experienced in this great country. I have two beautiful kids Azra and Ajdin. Iowa is everything I wished for. I feel blessed that I do not have to worry about my safety or being disrespected because my name is different. My life has been hard, moving from place to place and leaving friends, family, and memories behind. I look forward to a better future. I hope everyone gets what they dream of. I am proud to call myself an American! God bless the entire world.

As I read, I was reminded of one of my favorite writers who'd covered stories in Iraq and Afghanistan...Except this isn't a reporter writing about people they'd never met until the day they'd arrived on the frontlines...This is about a fragile teenage woman, her family, friends and country; trapped in the midst of invasion and genocide. I often remembered Anne Frank as I read. I will not give anything away, as I feel anyone who wants to understand what this book is about, really needs to read it and experience it. At the end of the day, war is still war. Hasanic's work reminds us that war ends lives in many ways, but that also, for the survivors, it means beginning again, over and over...carrying the precious message of life,love and unity to all who might listen. I was deeply touched by this book. Thank you Ziska. "

I know of others who have gone through hard times, some even during the Bosnian war, but they don't know how to speak of these things without being drowned by them. Ziska does a good job of helping you feel her pain...and come out on the bright side. There are lessons here for all children who have gone through difficult times. I hope there are also lessons we are willing to learn on welcoming strangers into our country and our lives. I'm glad Des Moines was such a welcoming place that they built their lives here and were always able to come back after visiting their homeland. Thank you for sharing, Ziska."

Living in fear for your own life and your loved ones is the worst and hardest feeling anyone can experience. The author did an absolutely amazing job explaining the terror and sorrow of Bosnian people during the war.
