About the Book

I thought she had brought us to the wrong room. The profile of the man lying on the bed was not my dad’s. Nastaran stood frozen. Mom pushed her on forward. I was just looking at them both. Half of the man’s face was bruised. Dried-up bloodstains were all over his neck and down from his head. You could not see the rest of his body as it was covered under the sheets. I gripped Nastaran’s hand.
“He is asleep; do you want to wake him up?”
“Shut up.”
The man’s face was shaved, and there were tubes in his mouth and nose. This man was not my father. Nastaran cried nonstop. I could hear Mom’s breathing and her cries too. I felt so sorry for this man. Nastaran put her head on the sheet covering the man’s hands and continued her crying. I was like a wooden stick standing next to him and looking. All the hospital equipment seemed scarier than the dead man’s face. His skin was as white as a ghost, and his cheekbones were standing out. With puffed eyes and a half-open mouth, he was asleep and was snoring like a baby.

About the Author

Mahshid Sharif has a master’s degree from Stockholm University in general education (with concentration in social behaviorism). She is working as a well-respected Iranian-Swedish with her extensive years of differing experiences both in Sweden and Iran as well. Her son, Pouya, was educated and raised in Sweden. Her husband, Majid Sharif, a recognized researcher, literary author (in Farsi), and a renowned translator, was martyred in 1998 (in what is known as the serial killings of that era in Iran). After learning of the facts that led to his untimely death, as a single mother who had to raise her young son in the capital of Sweden, she went into isolation and state of shock as she was afraid for the life of Pouya and herself. Her seven books and many articles have been published in Iran and now for the first time in the USA. She believes that the voice of Majid Sharif and many other martyred authors like him can continue to resonate through the ages. Her inspiration for writing this romantic novel for the Americans for the first time is this: In writing I honor and respect all the authors who are struggling with censorship and fear of expressing themselves.
