About the Book

Grammy’s Little Pilot is about a young girl named Macy. Macy spends her time enjoying the outdoors and gazing up at the sky eagerly awaiting an airplane to fly over her house. She and her mother live close to an airport where airplanes fly over hourly. Her mother often teases her about watching airplanes and actually giving the airplanes names. Macy’s grandmother, whom she calls Grammy, visits on a regular basis. When she visits, she always brings her dog Chi Chi, whom Macy loves very much. One night, when Grammy is visiting, they discuss Macy’s attraction for airplanes. While Macy’s mother seems lighthearted about it, it is Macy’s grandmother who encourages her to become a pilot. Her grandmother tells her she can be anything she wants and also tells her to always do her very best and school.

About the Author

In everyday life, children ask their parents many questions that parent gets to choose how to explain, answer, and even pose questions back to their children. My goal in writing books is to give parents the opportunity to talk to their children about nontraditional families. As a writer, I will not explain why Jenny, a young Asian girl, has two American parents. I will not explain why Macy is being raised by a single mother with no mention of a male presence in her life. I will not explain why Dillon has two moms, or why Johnna lives with his uncle on a boat. My intention with this series is to leave out any explanation of families that are not as perfect as some may see fit. This world of ours is changing ever so quickly. Accepting change and not being judgmental are key elements in helping children be successful in our future.
