Soldiers come into the mountains of North Carolina to take the Cherokee to a reservation in Oklahoma, disrupting the quiet farm life of Tsali and his family. Tsali’s natural instinct to protect his family leads to the death of a soldier. Is Tsali a killer? Will he be a martyr? As with other historical figures like Daniel Boone, Davy Crockett, and Johnny Appleseed, we often make our heroes more than human. So is the story of Tsali.

About the Author

Gail Cartee has a heart for children and history. She has taught for more than twenty years in the schools surrounding her beloved mountains. Her deep love of history prompted her to write Tsali, a fictional account of the legendary hero of the Eastern Band Cherokee.
