About the Book

What do you do when the story you inherit isn't the story you want to live? The Name Stayed is a deeply personal memoir about identity, resilience, and the courage to rewrite a legacy without forgetting where it began. Through honest storytelling and powerful reflection, Desmond Skyers invites readers into a life shaped by family, loss, mistakes, second chances, and the relentless pursuit of purpose. Growing up, the weight of incarceration, broken relationships, and generational hardship cast a long shadow over his future. It often seemed as though history had already decided who he would become. But life has a way of presenting defining moments, moments that force us to choose between repeating the past or creating something entirely new. With vulnerability and conviction, Desmond recounts the victories and failures that transformed him from a young man searching for direction into a leader committed to family, integrity, and service. Along the way, he explores what it means to confront inherited pain, take responsibility for your choices, and discover that true strength is found not in perfection but in perseverance. This is more than a memoir. It is a conversation about masculinity, healing, forgiveness, fatherhood, heritage, and the quiet decisions that shape a lifetime. It challenges the belief that our beginnings determine our endings and reminds us that while we may carry the names, histories, and burdens of those who came before us, we are never powerless to build something better. Whether you have faced adversity yourself or simply wondered how to break cycles that seem impossible to escape, The Name Stayed offers hope, honesty, and a powerful reminder: your past may explain your story, but it never has to define your future. The name may stay the same, but the legacy is yours to write.

About the Author

Desmond Skyers is an entrepreneur, mentor, and storyteller whose life has been shaped by resilience, accountability, and the pursuit of purpose. Raised in Miami and deeply connected to his Jamaican heritage, he grew up surrounded by stories of hardship, incarceration, and generational struggle. Those experiences became the foundation of a lifelong question: Is it possible to inherit a history without becoming imprisoned by it? Over the years, Desmond built a career leading teams, developing businesses, and mentoring others while quietly confronting his own past. Rather than allowing adversity to define him, he chose to let it refine him. His journey has been marked by setbacks, difficult lessons, second chances, and an unwavering commitment to becoming a better father, partner, leader, and man. Outside of writing, Desmond has a passion for entrepreneurship, automotive restoration, content creation, and mentoring young people. He believes that every challenge carries the potential to become someone else's roadmap, and that our greatest responsibility is to leave behind a legacy that creates opportunity instead of limitation. His first memoir, The Name Stayed, explores identity, masculinity, family, and the invisible weight of inherited survival. With honesty and reflection, Desmond shares the moments that shaped his life, from childhood uncertainty to adulthood, where he learned that healing begins when we stop running from our stories and start owning them. Through his work, Desmond hopes readers will recognize that while none of us choose where our story begins, we all have the ability to decide how it continues. He believes legacy is not measured by the mistakes we inherit but by the courage we show in breaking destructive cycles, choosing integrity over impulse, and becoming the person the next generation deserves to remember. This memoir is an invitation to do exactly that.
