About the Author

Shaila Karkera is a children’s author, educator, and community leader whose work has helped thousands of children in underserved communities learn and thrive. As co-founder of Memphis-Mumbai Connect Preschools, she helped establish early-childhood education programs that have educated nearly 9,500 children in underserved areas of Mumbai, India. She is also the author of Giving Thanks, with proceeds supporting children’s charities. Proceeds from sales of My Magic Carpet Ride will also benefit children’s charities. Through her leadership with organizations including the National Civil Rights Museum and the Women’s Foundation for a Greater Memphis, Shaila has advanced initiatives that expand opportunity for children and families.
