About the Book

With the longest story, “Incident at Deer Lodge” as the centerpiece, a tale about an alleged escape from Montana State Prison, this is a collection of stories, story-sketches and memoirs that explore a variety of relationships, sometimes successfully and sometimes not, because there is never an answer for each and every question. Situations range from the banal to the bizarre, from the weirdly cute to the most subtle, and from the exquisitely tender to the most violent. Someone said many of the stories seem like synopses of whole books, at once both spare and panoramic. Yet each peculiar character follows a dramatic and fateful path. There are 35 writings, taking place from Alaska to Hawaii, and Upstate New York to Egypt.
