About the Book
Dusty Rhodes, fifteen, is remanded to the custody of his Aunt Molly Medlin, who lives in the Old Hopkin ante bellum mansion near Alabama Landing, when his father and mother are forced to flee from the law, brought on by the “river-rats” squabble with the Corps of Engineers, who were in the process of straightening and deepening the river for barge traffic. Dusty is very unhappy in the “hanted” old mansion, with his gaunt-faced Aunt Molly, who calls him a lost boy, prays over him, reads scriptures from the Bible to him. He is saved from his Aunt that first night when Marsha Weiss, mistakenly thinks the Hopkin house is a hotel. She came to Alabama Landing trying to find her parents, Joan and Art Weiss, whose plane went down in the swamp. Dusty agrees to be her guide.
