About the Book

Strangers don´t seem to be welcome in the small Texas town where traveler George Johnson has stopped.  Unwilling to leave before he´s ready, he is challenged and drawn on by the local fast gun, Keller, who isn´t quite fast enough.  Johnson´s promptly arrested, and waits for either a circuit judge or a lynch mob. Johnson encourages the sheriff to wire a railroad detective, Gus Yager.  Yager is interested, and arrives to arrange extradition, which proves to involve gunplay and an early departure.  Local girls will miss them, but they´ll be back.  Johnson wants his freedom, and will help Yager to catch Keller´s boss, Mercer, a rancher who has a sideline in train robbery. Johnson and Yager have to board the train in a storm, and battle the Mercer gang for the gold that Yager guards.  Yager tells George Johnson, "One of you is going back with me, if one lives."
