About the Book

At Heaven's Door is the story of the immigrant invasion, development of the railroad, new religions and the politics and killings in the Civil War. Kevin Doyle escapes the Irish Potato Famine for the hope of a safe, but uncertain future in America. He achieves success in railroading, but then realizes that money doesn't solve all his problems or give him happiness. His life is touched by such historical figures as Horace Greeley, P.T. Barnum, Secretary of State Seward, Edwin and John Wilkes Booth, Generals Sherman and Grant, and Abraham Lincoln. The horror of the Civil War leads Kevin into a depression that eliminates all hope for a meaningful life. With a rekindled love of his childhood sweetheart, his terrors fade, and he enjoys a deep love he only dreamed of as a boy in Ireland.
