About the Book

A true friend comes to us, maybe only once in a lifetime. Some “true” friends are born just down the street form us. Some are born right in our very own house. Some of our very best of friends could be our very own brothers and sisters. It could be our fathers and even our mothers. Regardless, we all need friends to make our lives complete. Sometimes, we move away to different places. Some people move to a different part of town, a different street, a different county or, a different state. And some move an ocean away. Friends come in different sizes and ages. And some of our very best friends turn out to be our next door neighbors. Age had no bearing on how a friendship begins. On a personal note, some of my best friends turned out to be co-workers who stay in contact with me and vice versa. The question is, who far does one go to maintain a very special friendship? How many secrets and how many promises can be kept in complete confidence between two friends and, for how long? How long does one have to know to someone to know they are now trusted friends? Is it a week, a month, or does it take years? What if there is a forty or fifty, or even a sixty year gap between the two? What happens when a promise is made to fulfill, and time goes by unfulfilling that promise? Do you forget the promise? Do you throw the promise to the wind and hope it never comes back to haunt you for the rest of your life? How do you sleep knowing your promise was never to be kept now that your friend has gone? But deep down inside, that promise still haunts you? How do you fix it? How do you make it right? What to do? What to do? There’s always a way, if you trust in your best friend. We should always trust in Jesus Christ to point us in the right direction.

About the Author

I am a retired police officer by profession. I was born in Harlingen, Texas. Our family migrated to West Texas in the early 1960's. As a pre-teen, I shared time with my two older brothers selling popcorn up and down the aisles inside a theater back in Harlingen. We worked in the cotton fields hoeing weeds during the summers and picking cotton in the fall. We were back in the fields during the harvesting season of onions and cabbage in the frosty mornings in order to help our parents put food on the table. Back when one could earn twenty five or thirty cents an hour, working ten hour days in the hot summer sun, was no fun. But at times, it was fun and undoubtedly, necessary in order to survive. We were six brothers and one sister. Thanks to our parents who always wanted us to finish high school, we are all high school graduates of New Deal ISD, which is in Lubbock County, Texas. I attended Texas Tech University but eventually dropped out in order to marry my high school sweetheart. After 47 years, I still love her with all my heart. My jobs went from working the fields, working at a slaughterhouse, a meat market, a warehouse, and driving the big rigs. From there, I went to work for the Lubbock Police Department as a street cop During my years of working, many friends have touched my life. The fact that friendships make a huge part of our lives, is what inspired me to write this book about friends who sometimes, become more like fathers and brothers. We’ve all had those types of friends. I am also a regular writer and a regular commentary contributor to the Lubbock Avalanche Journal newspaper in the Sunday commentary pages. I write opinions, mainly about recent events taking place in our country, the state or, our local community. At the same time, I try to write in such a way as to offend no one. I am thankful and grateful for the opportunity to do so. My wife, Orelia (Cookie) is, and will always be, my inspiration. And having her as my biggest critic, I am thankful to her for allowing me to continue to write my stories, my books. Thank you for all of your unconditional support! I love you forever and always!
