About the Book

Scott Connor is a man trying to flee his past. Estranged from his father and brother, denying skills he acquired as a covert assassin in the top-secret government agency known only as BLACK, he works as a low-profile psychologist, and plays at womanizing, in San Francisco, California.

This fragile existence changes in just one day: he is summoned to Washington, D.C., by his father, Flynn Connor, a retired Army general. Resistant to the old man’s commands (whom he addresses only as "General"), he is nevertheless intrigued when his father tells him his brother, Glenn Connor--who happens to be the President’s National Security Advisor--has inexplicably disappeared. General Connor insists that Scott can use his covert, deadly skills to locate his brother more quickly than all the spooks at Langley or NSA.

Scott is further horrified to learn that Glenn’s son Brian, who was presumed to have died in a boat explosion along with Glenn’s wife, is actually alive but being held captive by a lethal cult of fanatics known as the "Family of Humans".

No matter his feelings regarding his father and brother, Scott realizes he cannot leave an innocent child in the clutches of the murderous cult, so he sets out to infiltrate the sect and rescue his nephew. And he is frightened and repulsed to discover just how quickly he drops back into the deadly persona he created as an operative in BLACK, where killing was merely one instrument in the toolbox of skills he called upon daily.

But on his mission to rescue young Brian, Scott encounters the ultra-nationalist billionaire Wendell Hall, and the seemingly immortal assassin who calls himself Mr. Thaddeus. Together, these two dog and thwart Scott’s every move as he uncovers a conspiracy that entwines like a serpent the kidnapping of his brother, the National Security Agency, a shadowy group of right-wing billionaires... and no less than the destruction of the American way of life!

About the Author

An intermediate-level curmudgeon with a permanent case of male PMS, David Burton doesn’t much care for author biographies. After all, if his life was so damn interesting, he’d write an autobiography about it and sell it to the movies. Instead, he’s a geek with an affinity for technology and a love of sci-fi and espionage fiction. He’s worked at probably twenty different jobs in his life, when it finally dawned on him that taking orders from someone else was a pretty silly thing to put himself through. And so he writes. Now the only orders he takes are from the voices in his head. Fortunately, none of them have said anything about sniper rifles or bell towers. Yet.* *(Publisher’s note: For the humor-impaired among our readers, Mr. Burton is joking… we think.)
