About the Book

I was born in Newton Iowa.  Most likely, I will not die there.  Except for the material things I have acquired along the way, all of my substance and spirit are of that place. None of the world I have seen has influenced me more than the beginning days of my life in Newton.  It is just now that I see how deeply placed and resourceful, how powerful, those days have been.  There have been many occasions, I suppose, where this knowledge should have become obvious to me.  The long drives from various transient house towns, (my wife, Susan, says you can only have one home town) would have given me time to ponder and scrutinize and decipher these memories and the deep feelings they conjure.   The death of my Mother brought introspection, but no understanding.  Why would news of Charlie Heffords latest parole bring me such pain?   I just dont know.  Maybe the answer can be found if I can just recall where it all started and the journeys my friends and I began those years on Fifteenth Street.   Join me as I retrace my steps and find where the paths came together only to separate again as we chose our own directions.
