About the Book
Anyone For Tenting tells the story of one family camp following during WW II. However there were millions of young wives and some with children, who chose to stay with their husbands as they prepared for war. Each day was led with rarely a plan for tomorrow. These traveling families were greeted everywhere with open arms for the money they brought into the areas around the military bases. Even so they never became part of the local scene, rather they were accepted as gypsies, with money.
The Depression wasn’t over with the beginning of the War, therefore the money of the military families was a great relief. Smaller towns has the greater problems accepting us, larger places paid us no mind, so we moved in and out with barely a nod. The toughest settling down was anywhere in or around Washington DC. Just never go there during a big war.
Someone who read my book for me, said ‘It’s an authentic, straight forward story told in measured tones.’ I think of it as a situation comedy, there were many laughs in spite of all of our inconveniences. Future historians could read this and come away with a comprehensive understanding of the life we led. I’ve undertaken the task of elucidating those times with no stylistic frills.
