About the Book
Told from two points of view, “Angel Chickens” is a story of love. Russo Weaver is dying, and her last task is to explain a truth to her son Trooper. Russo tells Trooper of the days when they both came to Outlaw 17 years earlier, after escaping an unhappy marriage. They met portly Shirley Hackel, the owner of the Feedbag Diner. Shirley took Russo and toddler Trooper under her wing, and introduced her to cousin Cookie Jones, the owner of the local egg farm. Russo and Trooper begin a new life in tiny Outlaw. But things begin to turn sour when Russo’s husband Ellis picks up her trail.
While Trooper listens to Russo’s story, his own memories begin to emerge. Trooper narrates childhood memories of small-town life, but deals also with the time at hand. He is forced to look at his own life as he watches his mother slip away.
