About the Book

This is a picture book based on the life a real life person named Mary Breckinridge who in 1925 founded the Frontier Nursing Service (FNS for short) located in Wendover, KY (which is near Hyden, KY). Mary did a lot of good work for the area and helped mothers deliver healthy babies back in the day when mothers who lived in the mountain area of Hyden, KY had midwives deliver babies instead of a doctor. The FNS is still in business today educating interested persons learn the process of becoming a midwife.

About the Author

Betty (Davis) Jodrey grew up in Barbourville, Kentucky (Knox County). She first learned about Mary Breckenridge when she attended the Mary Breckenridge Festival in Hyden, Kentucky in 2002. Presently, she lives in Bethel, Ohio and enjoys spending time with her two daughters and their families. Five of her nine grandchildren were delivered by “midwives.” Betty is a retired librarian. In addition to spending time with her family, she loves to read, serve in her local church, and take mission trips to Port-au-Prince, Haiti. This is her first published book.
