Set in New York City on the eve of a national election, Till Human Voices Wake Us is a chronicle of two weeks in the life of Jeremiah Augustine, a Yale graduate who lives in a rooming house and works as a messenger for a Manhattan law firm. Destitute, drug-ridden, and suicidal, Jeremiah vows in a moment of despair to mend his ways and rebuild a life that has been shattered by tragedy. Yet shortly after making this vow, he finds a letter that he thinks contains proof of the existence of a plot to overthrow the government. His attempt to gather more evidence fails badly and leads to further complications. Though he never learns anything definitive about the plot, he eventually comes to terms with his past and recognizes his true destiny. Or does he?
