About the Book

When the School Bell Rang is a delightful look back at the little one-room school in Fayville, Massachusetts; a peek inside the classroom to see how the three Rs were taught, how the children were disciplined, what the daily routine was like and something about the teacher who ruled the students. The book is filled with the author’s memories and those of her classsmates; all attended the Fayville school.

A floor plan of the interior of the schoolhouse is included along with photos dating from 1897 to 1946.

About the Author

Charlotte Milani was born in Framingham, Massachusetts in 1925 and grew up in the little town of Fayville, MA. Her education, like that of her brothers, sisters, and friends, began in the one-room school on Oak Hill Road. The teacher was the same woman who taught her mother and nearly everyone else in that small community. Before her marriage, Mrs. Milani was a hospital dietitian and later worked in public health nutrition programs. She has two grown children and three grandchildren. She and her husband live in Pennsylvania. This is her first book.
