About the Book

This collection of stories was written by Erna to encourage in children the love of nature, language, and self. “Steve’s Zoo” was a collaboration with her son, who was learning how to create fantasy worlds by playing with words. “A Show of Hands” is the result of asking children to describe themselves through structured poetic invention.“Sasha’s Birds”illustrates the human need to name and classify while luxuriating in the world around us.

About the Author

Erna Hennessy--poet, mother, teacher and world traveler—was brought up on a family farm in Iowa where she learned to observe and delight in nature. She left home to join the WACS and see the world. She married and had two sons and a daughter. Her driving spirit helped start San Francisco’s unique Creativity Explored - a program that has inspired many children and adults with special needs to find a way to express themselves through art. Erna’s life encompasses the evolution of the American Woman, from rural labor to urban ease. Her tireless energy and love of words is uniquely her own.
