The story of Taylor’s life, has made me laugh, made me cry, and most importantly made me realize that while most people go through life and think they have it hard or rough, they have never walked a mile in the shoes of someone who has had it worse. She has AWAKENED me to the harsh realities that our native cultures have endured, and not through a history book lesson, but through the eyes of an individual who has survived it. She shows how domestic and cultural violence impacts society, and the individuals that have endured its most brutal lessons. Taylor has also showed that with a belief in one’s self, and with the power of love, that one can overcome steep adversity. Taylor was able to connect with me on a personal level, making it easier for me to understand exactly how and what she was feeling. The stories of her grandmothers let light into a world of pain, torment, and cruelty that spans multiple generations, and how it has impacted her life personally. It also allowed for the reader to experience the sub standard treatment of abused women and the cultural oppression of native cultures, both in her home country, and around the world. Allowing for the reader to see first hand, and to understand what true pain, abuse, and cruelty is.
