About the Book

Spirit of the Proud Land: The Sequel tells the rest of the story of the Ridges and Westmorelands. The sequel begins in October of 1829, with Godfrey Ridge and Patrick O’ Callahan signing on with a slave ship. However, at the time they were completely unaware that the sailing vessel’s main cargo would be slaves.

While on board the ship they became acquainted with Henry Shreve who planned an adventure up the Red River from New Orleans. While sailing the Red, their six-months quest would be remembered for the rest of their lives. The young men would travel with Henry Shreve on his historical journey to establish a port of entry now called Shreveport.

After that historic, challenging experience, Godfrey became a scout for the Overland Freight Company. He would be successful in opening up new trails and freight depots into Tennessee as far as the Mississippi River. He would eventually accept his mother’s marriage to Seth Wade, but only visited her on two separate occasions.

Joseph Westmoreland raised his family in Montgomery County, Alabama. One of his younger sons, Reuben, would eventually leave the nest to see the new land they called


About the Author

George Self grew up in the pineywoods of rural East Texas. Ironically, his background lies not in writing, but, instead, in Country Music and politics. However, the love of history and tracing his roots has always been a huge part of his life. He and his wife, Glenda, live in Nacogdoches, the oldest town in Texas. They have two daughters and four grandchildren.
