About the Book
In I FOLLOW THE COURSE, COME WHAT MAY, author Jeanne W. Knoop tells how the contradictions of the man named Daniel Edgar Sickles struck fire against each other, illuminating both his life and times. Charismatic, compromising, dashing, Daniel E. Sickles became a dedicated and beloved general in the United States Army in the 1860s, a hero at the Battle of Gettysburg, and perhaps a key figure in the Union victory there. Little known today, his life story is brought forward here from undeserved obscurity, as Sickle’s life intersected with many famous personages of his time, such as Presidents, Buchannan, Lincoln, Grant, and Johnson, the Queen of Spain, Isabella 11, Hamilton Fish, Jay Gould, and Horace Greeley, of New York politics, business, and journalism, in that order of names. Dan Sickles lived six full lifetimes in his many careers and relationships. A fasinating man of his time.
