About the Book

In 1913 the southern Colorado coal fields exploded into a war between the newly organized United Mine Workers of America and the Rockefeller owned Colorado Fuel and Iron. The company's history had been marked by violent deaths in mine explosions and infant mortalities from disease caused by squalid conditions in the company owned camps. The Death of Spring tells the story of Vincenzo, an Italian immigrant, who searched for the American dream only to find the harsh realities of life in the coal camps.

1900: America, the land of opportunity. For many immigrants it meant death in the struggle between workers and the company. The dreams of Vicenzo, an Italian immigrant, began dying with the death of his older brother and blended into the nightmares that were the mining camps of Southern Colorado.

About the Author

Silvio Caputo was born and raised in Trinidad, Colorado and received his B.A. degree from Adams State College where he graduated Cum Laude in 1973 with majors in History and Political Silvio Caputo was born and raised in Trinidad, Colorado and received his B.A. degree from Adams State College where he graduated Cum Laude in 1973 with majors in History and Political Science. He received his M.A. degree in English in 1976. He has taught literature and writing on the high school and university levels since 1974. He received the Distinguished Teachers award from the state of Colorado in 2002. His first novel, The Death of Spring, dealt with the Ludlow massacre in the coalfield wars of southern Colorado. He has also published non-fiction articles about the massacre and on relations between labor and management of the early 1900’s.Science. He received his M.A. degree in English in 1976. He has taught literature and writing on the high school and university levels since 1974. He received the Distinguished Teachers award from the state of Colorado in 2002. He has published both fiction and non fiction articles on the Ludlow Massacre and labor relations of the last century, giving lectures to various clubs and organizations throughout the state.
