About the Book

In the beginning, there was Dolores (The Mother), Alejandro (The Father), and the first-born child, Glorya. Joyce came two years later, and then, two years after that, came Julius. Dolores and Alejandro were very much in love. Their love produced the three children, whom they adored. Alejandro worked very hard to support his family, while Dolores, it seemed to him, was the best homemaker in the world. Alejandro was a talented house builder – a trade taught to him by his father. He had begun as a construction worker and later, through his many hours of hard work and through learned techniques, had become an excelled brick layer, proficient in adobe work, actually making his own sun–baked mud and straw bricks! Soon his work became known throughout all of Albuquerque, and it wasn’t long afterward, that he organized his own company, hiring the best workers – those whom he had come to respect as hardworking, capable men. He soon had a very thriving business. Dolores was a loving wife and mother. Rising early every morning, she had breakfast ready for Alejandro and the children, as well as their sack lunches. Dolores’ mornings were spent reading and studying the European Home Decorating books which she would check out of the library. From these, she would draw her own ideas by which to adorn their home, always staying within a certain budget. In the afternoons, Dolores studied bookkeeping from a family friend who was a C.P.A. (Now that Alejandro’s business was really taking off, she was to become his company’s bookkeeper.) As Glorya, Joyce, and Julius returned from school, they started on their homework, while Dolores prepared supper. Alejandro arrived from work, as everyone washed up before sitting at the table. After supper, everyone helped out clearing the table, washing and drying, and putting the dishes away. Alejandro and Dolores took turns in the evenings, looking over everyone’s homework. The routine was a good one – everyone knew and understood the plan, and adhered to it!. (Glorya is born to Alejandro and Dolores; is nurtured with love, religion, and guidance; and is raised in a very structured life.)
