About the Book
In 1996, a South Bronx Public School teacher introduced a holistic curriculum aimed at evoking qualities of caring, altruism and purpose in her students, and, within a year, student's attitudes toward school had transformed, with reading and writing scores soaring an average of three grade levels, and similar results obtained with two additional classes. This book documents the power of that long-overlooked part of human nature known as the higher self along with specific techniques for cultivating it.
About the Author
Raised in a Hindu spritual community, Krishmatie Ridgeway came to the Bronx with a unique perspective on education cultivated by her family. After earning a degree in anthropology from Lehman College she sought employment to help pay for it. Without credentials of any kind in education she was nonetheless hired by a principal willing to take a chance on her. Two years later she documented her unique approach. She continues to teach inner city kids in the Bronx.
