About the Book

Turning Point is a book of lessons masked and weaved among stories of pain, misfortune, and enlightenment. It was written with the intent to bring an understanding and awareness to both our kids and the people responsible for their development. It has so much to offer by way of lessons from the mentor, John G’MOE; from the relationship fostered by their teacher, Mrs. Debra, who demands respect without giving it back in return; and through the eyes and dialogues of the students who reluctantly participate in this mentoring class. It also speaks to the realities of poverty and social/environmental neglect that some kids experience in their day-to-day lives and the huge role it plays in their unwillingness and readiness to participate properly in an organized school setting.

About the Author

John M. Gilmore Sr. was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1975. He has always been a student of psychology and cognitive awareness. After years of studying, coaching various youth sports, and mentoring, he decided to put together a book that contained characters and both the lessons that resonated with him as a person, a father, and a developer and the lessons that captured the attention of his students, players, mentees, and kids. Coming from a background muddled and toiled with poverty, a lack of guidance, violence, and chaos, he wanted to write a book to help parents, teachers, administrators, other mentors, and at-risk young kids better understand the sensitivity of their individual circumstances as it relates to them learning and coexisting in life’s setting.
