About the Book

“The seminal idea of the twenty-first century" - Jean Houston

Joseph Campbell uncovered the Hero’s Journey as the deep structure of all adventure stories. In The Lovers’ Journey, William Pennell Rock reveals its counterpart, the universal pattern at the heart of every romance, from the Ramayana and Cinderella to Pride and Prejudice and the latest romantic comedy.

All romantic stories have four elemental figures – Hero, Heroine, Saboteur, and Nurturer – that interact through a shared arc of connection, separation, inspiration, struggle, and reunion. Rock elucidates this intricate pattern as the inner drama of our masculine and feminine selves, alienated by the Shadow and reunited through transformation in the process of Individuation.

Drawing on decades of scholarship, contemplative practice, and the experience of his Inner Romance workshops, Rock traces this code in Asian and Western wisdom traditions as well as evolutionary theory. He shows how the progress from separation to integration, from domination to balance provides a way forward for individuals, relationships, and a world longing for wholeness.

It is not Heroes who will save us, but Lovers.
