About the Book

The first in a series describing a nurse’s journey with the diagnosis of a rare movement disorder called dystonia. Dystonia is a disorder characterized by abnormal involuntary movements, sustained postures, and tremors. The disease can affect any muscle and/or group of muscles in the body. Beka describes treatments, success and failures in a poetic format that embraces the reader according to Pulitzer Prize winning author and journalist , Jimmy Breslin. This is a fascinating look at chronic illness written in a thought provoking style and blend of words.


About the Author

Rebecca “Beka” Serdans, R.N., was born in Munster, Germany, graduating from the University of Rochester, where she received a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Nursing in 1989. She completed Pre-med Studies and was to begin medical school when symptoms of dystonia, a neurological movement disorder, appeared. Today she resides in New York City working within the Critical Care Division at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center. Beka has been awarded several honors for her poetry from Illiad Press and Poetry.com. Most recently, she has appeared on Dateline NBC “A Pain the Neck” and MSNBC “Deadly Poison eases Muscle Disorders” sharing her experiences with Dystonia. She has assisted in web site development regarding Dystonia for Athena Diagnostics, Inc. and serves on their public speaking forum. Beka has written several patient-oriented educational materials on the subject of dystonia for patients of all ages. Much of her work is available through The Bachmann-Strauss Dystonia & Parkinson Foundation, Inc., DyStonia, Inc. and The Dystonia Medical Research Foundation. She has also collaborated with the world reknowned expert on Dystonia, Dr.Mitchell F. Brin, M.D., Director of The Movement Disorders Program at Mount Sinai Medical Center in NYC. Recently, Beka has created a non-for-profit organization, Care4Dystonia, to help establish the First Center of Excellence for Dystonia. She is an active bicyclist, gardener, photographer and patient-care advocate.
