About the Book

Imagine a world where princes can be turned into birds, where opulent palaces of exotic beings lie beneath the sea, where snarling, hungry wolves are just as ready to make you into a meal as to grant you the wishes of your dreams—this is the world of The Wonderful Treasure Horse: Mongolian, Manchu and Turkic Folktales From China, tales and legends translated, adapted and compiled by Fred H. Lobb.

Fred H. Lobb, a Canadian-born teacher, spent more than a decade pouring over Chinese-language texts, selecting, and translating the folktales, legends and proverbs that appear in this book. Among the stories are tales which are reminiscent of  “Beauty and Beast” and “Little Red Riding Hood,” as well as bizarre lesser-known folktales and legends from the forests, mountains and deserts of China’s northern frontier.

Each story comes with notes highlighting the cultural beliefs and pertinent folklore found in that story. In addition, a generous selection of Mongolian, Manchu, and Turkic proverbs, along with an extensive list of questions on each story for use in composition or discussion, appears in the appendix.
