About the Book

The story revolves around James Dennett, a law clerk turned photographer. He makes a meager living at Opera Sands caravan park, having moved there when his savings ran out. He survives on the unemployment benefit and occasionally selling photos to couples he meets at the local beach.

Unknown to him he has a brother, Allen Sheriff, who hates James and everything he stands for. All his young life, Allen has been subjected to his abusive drunkard father who sees James as the good son, with good grades and accomplishments. For this Allen is punished.

After years of abuse and therapy by Dr. Carol Stephens, Allen's father dies and he decides it's time for James to receive some punishment. After much thought and preparation, Allen sets his plan in motion.

Carl Rothsins, James's best friend, who he first meet when he came to Opera Sands, is a very religious person, with a serious family problem; his two adopted children have fallen in love with one another and he had had the misfortune to stumble upon them one afternoon in bed together. Lost and confused he goes to James for advice.

James tells Carl to go to church and think about the problem before rushing off gung-ho and ruining everything he has worked hard for.

Carl decides James has a point and sets off to the local church. It is there that Allen 'takes care' of him. He also kills Carl's children later that night.

The actual murder of James Dennett is to follow, but to do this Allen needs his brother in an isolated area. He sends his brother a letter in the guise of a publisher, informing James that he wants a series of night time shots of nearby Redwoods Forest.

Believing this letter to be true, James hopes this was the break he has been waiting for.

Allen's plans change drastically when James turns up at the beach at the same time as he is dealing to Carl's children.

He attacks James and for some reason, James doesn't see a man but a wolf instead. A werewolf he met once as a child.

James is in hospital, scarred for life from the attack. The police send a Dr. Carol Stephens to see him. The police need a description. They need him to break down that wall he has built around the killer.

While James is coming to terms with his scars, Allen has an encounter with a wolf-like animal. It attacks him, yet Allen finds himself unhurt and the night seems different now, somehow stranger, brighter. He realizes he has attained a night shadow - The ability to see almost clearly at night.

With a new confidence, Allen tracks down James for a final confrontation in which only one of them will walk away.
