About the Book
Jade Chatham‘s whole life was shrouded in mystery. Mr. Henry Chatham raised his daughter alone to be proud of her heritage and to make something of herself. Mr. Chatham is a major political figure in the town named for his family. In a town full of her family history, Jade is oblivious of it. Jade‘s father is hell bent on keeping the identity of her mother a secret and to keep Jade from going across the field to cavort with the poor white trash that resides there. Jade doesn‘t understand her father‘s hatred towards the neighbors and she doesn‘t understand why he is trying to protect her from her mother‘s memory. Jade and her father have always had a strained relationship but they manage to mend it before she goes to college. Even so, all the while she can’t stop thinking about the mysterious circumstances involving her mother. After upholding the standards her father set for her, Jade longs to connect with her mother. Why did her mother leave them? Why didn’t her mother stay with them and try to make things work? Would Jade ever find her mother and what reason would her mother have for abandoning her baby girl?
