About the Book
Three events greatly influenced the course of human history – the creation of a faith centered on One God, the emergence from the Dark Ages into a renaissance of enlightenment in the 16th century, and the religious wars in which almost half the population of Europe died 100 years later. These shared a common denominator: that God attended the constant appeals for protection and solace, in their lives, by royalty and citizens of the time. The appreciation of this faith was the use of the Name of God, in Hebrew, considered the language of God, on coins and medals of the middle ages.
About the Author
A numismatist for over 40 years, Dr. Needleman has traced the history of ancient and medieval English coinage, and of coins related to the wars between ancient Judea and Rome. Later, he became curious about the extensive use of the Name of God, always rendered in Hebrew, on coins and medals of 16th – 17th century Europe. His pursuit of this phenomenon in Scandanavian and German museums, and early numismatic books, revealed the background behind these coins, resulting in this unique book/catalog. Dr. Needleman has published several books and articles on a variety of topics. He is a past-president of the Chicago Coin Club.
