About the Book

We call this book A Meditation on Social Problems. A meditation means a quiet, mindful, and calm look at a problem which is in its reality, not a calm or quiet situation. For example when one is the victim of violence, one must take flight, fight back or try to resolve the situation. This means that we are using all of our resources for survival. The time to read a book and the luxury of a place to safely do that is whether we believe it or not, a privilege most people on earth do not have. It is our view that any sociology text that only further depresses its better students is a failure. Of course, we should look critically and closely at those institutions that shape our lives. This includes the running sores on the body politic. More than this, we must affirm that there is a way out for us and that way stresses reason, ethics, and collective action. We know that we live in an age of corporate domination and sauve qui peut but we do not give up hope. In fact we agree with Krazy Kat (1926) who once remarked: ”There is a heppy lend-fur, fur awa-a-ay.” We are working on that, Krazy.
