About the Book
In the early 1860’s, young Thomas Long moved his family into the recently ceded Creek Indian lands of western Georgia and homesteaded a farm. Lured away by the Civil War, he never returned, leaving his wife and children on their backwoods farm to mourn and manage without him. His two sons grew up to marry sisters and establish roots in a community called Little Vine. Two generations later in this same community, his grandson, Foster Long, and wife Lela reared their seven children on a two-horse farm amid the difficult years of the Great Depression. Their hard work and love protected their children from the depravation faced by many families during this time and instilled in them strength and values that would see them through the anxious years of World War II. Surviving the war, the seven families picked up their lives and moved forward, returning often with their children to the farm where they had spent so many happy years. The Long Legacy blends historical fact with interviews, family anecdotes, and letters to portray five generations of the Long family, bound by hard work and love.
