About the Book

Jeremiah O’Connor saw himself as a normal 15-year-old with an average life and problems – school, rivals, parents, siblings, learning to drive.  Everything except not having seen his natural father, Ryan, in ten years.  But that all changed one day in mid-October when Ryan returned.  Suddenly Jeremiah must find for himself the truth behind their separation, and when he does, his entire life is turned upside down.

Jeremiah feels the only way to see Ryan is to lie to his mother, Beth – not even letting her know Ryan has come back to town. Ryan encourages him to tell Beth the truth, yet Jeremiah refuses, knowing Beth would keep him from seeing Ryan. He finds himself in constant conflict with Beth, and begins to wonder if the tension is just over Ryan, or because he has come to see how Beth truly is.

At the same time the tension at home increases, Jeremiah finds conflict rising all around him.  His best friend Theo is at odds with his family over his sister Rachel’s faked learning disability; his problems with the captain of the varsity football team become increasingly worse; and Beth forbids him from seeing Courtney, the wealthy girl he is seeing that is anything but typical.

When Beth finds Ryan has returned; when his favorite teacher’s secret is revealed; and when he is losing Courtney to Beth’s attitude about her, Jeremiah must decide who he is and what he stands for – whether what he believes in is worth risking everything he has.
