About the Book

The writers of these letters never met. But, from rather tentative beginnings in 1971, their correspondence grew to become a record of their lives. One--Coburn Britton--lived mainly in Manhattan and participated in many cultural events of the day. The other--Jack Sullivan--lived in the woods of Maine, watching the world and his own life unfold. Together their letters give us a frank and often funny portrait of their lives and times.

About the Author

Authors' biographies Coburn Haskell Britton (1935-1997) was a poet and publisher. In the period of these letters, he was editing the magazine Prose, a forum for non-fictional writing. He also was working on the poems that appeared in his volume Second Seasons (Horizon Press, 1982). In later years he published four more volumes of poetry, including Lesser Goods (1987) and Adrian Sonnets (1995). The last project of his life was to put his long correspondence with Jack Sullivan into publishable form Jack Sullivan (1936- ) was born in Lowell, Massachusetts and was educated at Andover. Then he went to Harvard, where after many sabbaticals he took a degree with honors in The Classics. Wisely deciding against an academic career, he slutted around Cape Ann, California, and the backwoods of Maine. He's still doing it. He plans to end up shrivelling in Key West.
