About the Book

Most of what is written about war centers upon the bitters of war, armies moving this way and that way with arms and legs flying this way or that way. But soldiers are human, like all of us. They have their hopes, defeats, loves and dreams. This book chronicles the true human experiences of a small band of American soldiers during World War II and their affection for one another. These anecdotal stories, all true, about leadership, love, and intrigue, all took place in one memorable vintage year.

About the Author

Dino Paci was raised in a row home in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. During the depression, he gave five cent shoe shines for pocket money. Then, as many others during the big band era, he headed for the dance halls after dark. In 1943, along with a small group of American soldiers, he ran two prison camps as First Sergeant -- one in Germany, the other in France. He was offered an officer’s commission but turned it down, choosing instead to return home to South Philadelphia. He got busy with family and career, but never stopped remembering the shared times of the men he’d served with and who had served with him.
