About the Author

Joan Stade was born Joan Isabel Bulkeley on October 1, 1940, in Long Beach, California, the eldest of five children. Her father, John Duncan Bulkeley, and mother, Alice Wood Bulkeley, met and married in China in during World War II when John, a junior officer on board a naval ship stationed along the coast near Hong Kong, Joan’s father remained in the Navy, moving up the ranks and moving the family around the country, including homes in New York, California, Maryland, Virginia, Tennessee and Washington, D.C. After attending the University of Maryland, Joan made a decision that would change her life. She became a stewardess for United Air Lines. On a flight to Wyoming for training, she met Herb Stade, a pilot who was headed to Denver for training. They married December 21, 1962, and settled in Oak Brook, Illinois, where they raised two daughters: Karen Elizabeth and Sharon Lynn. Today, Joan spends numerous hours volunteering on the board of the USO of Illinois and as a member of the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary. She has also written several books about her family to preserve their legacy for future generations. Joan and Herb have traveled the world and still enjoy discovering new places. Her most precious time, however, is spent with her grandchildren: Samantha, Tyler and Tommy.
