About the Author

Marcia Adams is nationally known as a food historian, and award winning food columnist. She is a recognized authority on Amish, Shaker, and English cookery. Her work triggered the renaissance of interest in traditional and historically authentic American cuisine. All six of her best selling cookbooks were accompanied by highly rated national public television series. She writes for many national magazines, including Gourmet and The New York Times Sunday Magazine and frequently lectures around the country. In the spring of 2001, Adams published a book and produced a public television documentary in a totally different genre: MARCIA ADAMS: HEART TO HEART. The journal and visual record of her waiting for a heart transplant was a poignant, unforgettable, and informative combination. And there were recipes. “Food will always be part of my life, even when I don’t eat much.” By this time, Adams had struggled with congestive heart failure for 10 years. This second book, MARCIA ADAMS: HEART ANEW, is the triumphant sequence, the happy ending to the first book and documentary. HEART ANEW explores the experience of her heart transplant and recovery, and provides informational sources as to how women can identify and be treated for heart disease in its different forms. It is a funny book; her sense of humor is as honed as ever. Her recipes dazzle with their usual variety and distinctiveness and ease of preparation. Her writing is full of joy, honest appraisals of her struggle with the pain, her insistence on independence, and her return to public life, just five months after the transplant. “Death was not an option; there is too much to do, so many experiences that I’ve not yet had,” says Adams. She leaves for Angkor Wat, Cambodia, in February, 2002. “I’ve not been there and for forty years, have sincerely yearned to explore those ancient ruins. The heart transplant taught me this: don’t put aside your own personal pleasures too long.” “Perhaps there is some wisdom in instant gratification, after all?”
