John Robert Todd comes from the small town of Burdett, Kansas. He graduated from college in Dodge City and became interested in the American Civil War while in the army near Washington DC. He has traveled throughout the United States visiting historical sights(battlefields and homes). He also likes to go to auctions where he purchased for a few dollars a manuscript. The manuscript told the story of Sarah E. Matthews travels during the civil war. The author with his wife(Mary) in research related to the manuscript traveled to Lebanon, St. Louis, Jefferson City, and Springfield in his home state of Missouri. Other states they visited to learn first hand what Sarah saw as she traveled during the civil war were Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, and Louisiana. It is Sarah’s journey that this book is about.
