About the Author

Lucy M. Cohen, Costa Rican born cultural anthropologist, received her Ph.D. from The Catholic University of America. She has conducted research in the United States, Latin America, Macau, Hong Kong, Spain and Portugal. An author of books and articles on immigrants, 19th century overseas Chinese in the Americas, medical anthropology, and Colombian women, she is Professor and former Chair, Department of Anthropology, The Catholic University of America Ieda Siqueria Wiarda, Brazilian born political scientist, received her Ph.D. from the University of Florida. She has taught an dlectured in the United States, Latin America, Europe, and Japan. An author of several books and dozens of scholarly articles, she has been the Luso-Brazilian Specialist at the Library of Congress since 1990. She received the Order do Rio Branco Medal from the Brazilian government, the highest civilian medal from her native country.
