About the Book
This facsimile of an original travelogue from 1913 details the experiences of a pioneer Arizona matron and her family during an automobile trip through the American Southwest. Frances Porter Sands’s observations and opinions give life to an era when this type of travel was uncommon, if not rare. Her photographs document the dress, manners, and scenery of the West in the Edwardian Era. This book is an invaluable resource for the student of early twentieth century Americana.
About the Author
The daughter of an owner of a small chain of pharmacies in Illinois, Frances Porter married Louis Sands after an eight year engagement and settled in Glendale, Arizona in 1906. An inveterate photographer, her Kodak camera followed her everywhere and was used to document her life experiences, and those of her family, for nearly three-quarters of a century. She died in 1964 at the age of eighty-nine. John P. Sands Jr., the collator of the travelogue, is one of her eight grandchildren.
