Fires of Bitterness is a book of memoirs that tells a story about the fires of bitterness that brewed in the small town of Chipley, Florida, county seat of Washington County.. It involves the happenings in and around the Chipley Police Department, the Washington County Sheriff’s Department, the Washington County Hospital and the Chipley City Council. While there were fires of bitterness between many of the town folks, there were literal fires burning throughout the county destroying homes and property, stealing and robbing, and other criminal acts. It entails the efforts of one mayor who sought to put down corruption and establish a reputable police department.
About the Author
H. D. Shuemake, nicknamed Sam by his father, was born and reared in Chipley, a small West Florida town. He entered the ministry in 1959, and has continued to pastor and serve as Chancellor of Bethany Divinity College and Seminary of Dothan, Alabama, but during the years between 1970 and 1974 he entered the arena of politics. He ran for the office of U.S. House of Representatives in 1970, but failed in his attempt to win a seat. In 1971 he ran for the office of Mayor of his home town and was elected twice to serve two separate terms.
