Night Colors

Under cover of night,
birds stop singing,
possums, and rats,
and mice prowl,
trees go gray, nearly black, in moonlight,
fireflies fade,
yellow lights from windows in overcast walls
push back the dark
until, one by one,
light is gone-
shadows filled with indigo
and burnt umber under amber street lights
stretch across my neighborhood,
and one lone saxophone played on a back porch
paints golden strokes
pointing to-
green.
