About the Author
Dr. Owens is a 1966 magna cum laude graduate of the University of Indianapolis and a 1970 graduate of the Indiana University School of Medicine, where she was elected to membership in the honorary medical society, Alpha Omega Alpha. She is a former assistant clinical professor of the Indiana University School of Medicine. She is a member and past president of her county’s chapter of Prevent Child Abuse Indiana. She served on the state committee to develop a program to educate regarding the Shaken Infant Syndrome and worked as an educator for that program. She has served as staff physician for group homes. She has received several awards recognizing her work for the welfare of children: the United States Attorney General’s “Special Recognition Award for Service to Victims,” Options for Better Living’s “Special Friend” award, the Local Council of Women’s “Humanitarian Award,” the Indiana Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers’ “Citizen of the Year,” Prevent Child Abuse Monroe County’s “Outstanding Contributions in the Prevention of Child Abuse,” and Exchange Clubs’ “Book of Golden Deeds” award. She is a licensed foster parent. She has two grown children.
